Barry’s first book, Broken Rules and Other Stories (Transit Lounge, 2020) – supported by Creative Victoria, and Varuna, the National Writers’ House – was shortlisted in the 2021 Queensland Literary Awards, for the University of Southern Queensland Steele Rudd Award for a Short Story Collection. The development of his second book, Afterdark, is supported by the Victorian Government’s Sustaining Creative Workers Initiative through Creative Victoria and Regional Arts Victoria.
From Liverpool in the UK, Barry currently lives in Melbourne’s western suburbs. As well as Australia, his short stories are published in the UK and USA, and have been recognised in literary awards including the Overland Victoria University Short Story Prize, the Museo de la Palabra International Flash Fiction Competition, the inaugural City Of Melbourne Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Awards (an initiative to mark Melbourne’s status as a UNESCO City Of Literature), the Bridport Prize, and The Age Short Story Award.
He has been with Elwood Writers since the group’s inception in 2007. He is a member of the Varuna Alumni Association. He holds a diploma from the Fundación César Egido Serrano and the Museo de la Palabra, and is one of their ambassadors.
